New Homestead Reality Show

We received the following e-mail yesterday from Danielle Burrows. I’ll let her introduce herself:

I’m a producer for two television production companies that joined forces a few years back: Marc Summers Productions (Marc was the host of Nickelodeon’s “Double Dare” in the 1980s and 1990s, and is currently the host of Food Network’s “Unwrapped”) and Shooters Post & Transfer (www.shootersinc.com).

Marc Summers and Shooters currently have a television series on the air — Food Network’s “Dinner: Impossible” — as well as a new Food Network series scheduled to premiere in 2010.

We are working on idea for a prospective new series that will document families intentionally trading in status quo lifestyles for something different (ideally, a rural homestead with limited access to modern conveniences). We imagine this show being structured something like the series “Little People, Big World” on TLC, which perhaps you’re familiar with – each episode would highlight different goings-ons in the lives of a family as they say goodbye to their current home and work to build a new lifestyle that lacks the conveniences they’re used to, but that offers so much more.

My reason for emailing is this: I’m looking for families that might be downsizing from a traditional home to something less traditional: A rural homestead, an urban homestead, etc.  We are seeking families with at least two children between the ages of about 4 and 17 who are about to make changes along these lines, and who’d be interested in hearing more in consideration for such a series.

I recognize the irony present here: Your readers are giving up conventional living to decrease the presence of media in their day-to-day, and here I am trying to document their move!  I assure you that we are committed to quality, honest, programming that aims simply to profile intentional living.

If you fit the bill, we’d love to hear from you.  Please answer the following questions and email them to Danielle at dburrows@shootersinc.com.

Your name?

Family members’ names and ages?

Phone number?

Email address?

Where do you live now? (city, state, and type of home/lifestyle?)

Where do you plan to move (city, state, and type of home/lifestyle?)

When will this happen?

Why are you making this change?

What needs to happen between now and your move?

How do your immediate family members (spouse, kids) feel about this change?  How do your friends and extended family feel?

I am Aron Aldrich, and I currently live in Chattanooga, TN. I am a single mother attending college to become an art teacher. I have dreamed of becoming a Waldorf Teacher. The school that would allow me to complete this dream is located in Eugene, OR. I grew up in a very large family in upstate NY in a 18th century post office with a very eccentric father. We had no modern amenities and grew all our own food. We lived like this for a few years and after some time I grew to appreciate the experience. I am researching and quite frankly longing to try to live this way again with my completely citified children. My oldest son is not excited of the possibility of a life change, and my family would be concerned but not surprised if I was to try a very different way of life. I am so excited by the possibilities of knowledge that my children could gain by a homesteading experience.
